I can see you have 2 when I view your full profile Austen... They have come from other sites. Interesting...

Of course I'm not convinced our 38 year old post grad students would have the need for "badges". I assume this concept has come from K-12...

Hi Andrew,

The data suggests that the old are just as motivated by gamification as not so old άνετος

"the average age for an Australian gamer is now 32, compared to 36 for the whole population, and 75% are 18 or older."

Source: http://www.theage.com.au/digital-life/games/blogs/screenplay/new-statistics-reveal-the-face-of-australian-gaming-20120802-23g49.html#ixzz2TzVXPpDW

To my mind the challenge is really about good instructional/game design which as we all know takes time.

Just finished a gamification course from coursera, the course mentioned the average gamer age is 30 which is close to Australia. Wonder same research done for Asian countries?

Nicky, i was enrolled in that same coursera unit with the 64,000 others. It was a great insight into gamification. how timely that moodle has joined in. Particularly how it has been done so seamlessly. totally motivating. You can tell just by the discussion forum posts

As a 41 year old post-grad student... bring on the badges!

I grew up with DnD and even now use a fitness app that gives out rewards and 'levels' you up.

We had this discussion yesterday with a few colleagues.  Personally, I like the badges concept but I don't equate it to stickers or anything from my primary school days.  I am really chuffed to get my first badge and I have big plans for using them once we upgrade during the summer (and many of the iMoot sessions I am planning to join in with are to do with badges and gamification).

However, I think I might get some feedback from students across the college to see what we should call them.

Me too I hope!

Everyone likes to get a pat on the back for completing work. The success of achievements in Xbox Live led to their inclusion in the Play Station network and then later in Steam. It really has unlocked a new breed of gamer known as 'the completionist.'

I think it is a great way to help encourage students to not just complete the bare minimum but to complete something comprehensively. After all, it takes a long time to make these courses...

By the number of posts, it suggests we are all

experiencing that 'zing' of the unexpected.

Are they hidden like 'easter eggs' on some websites?

Is it enough, or will the thrill wear off after a while?

I would love to think these might be enough to start my undergrads using moodle more, but I need to structure in more so that the intrinsic motivation kicks in  and stays...??

I do love the idea of bringing the fun into Academia - I think it needs it!

Yes I received two, too!

But only one via Email...

I see a very big potential for badges since you can include the requirements for earning it. This means that it goes way beyond stickers in primary and secondary schools because these badges can be included in e-portfolios, professional websites, etc.

Looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow,

Stephan

Just for the record, since it came up in one of the chats yesterday (or maybe tomorrow?) :  the famous quote "We don't need no stinkin' badges" is a reference to a classic scene from the film Treasure of the Sierra Madre.

Actually, it's almost as famous a canonical misquote as "Play it again, Sam." ;)
